Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing in to express my interest in the position of a Research and Conservation Officer offered on the Singapore Zoo website (http://recruit.zoo.com.sg/wrs/). I am currently an undergraduate of the National University of Singapore, expecting to receive my Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences in 2010.
During my course of undergraduate studies, I attended many field trips to nature reserves, parks and the zoo and learnt much about the nature and wildlife. I have also taken courses on academic writing and communication skills which enhanced my writing skills as well as communicating skills, which are both essential for the position of a Research and Conservation Officer. Also, having volunteered as the conservation ambassador at the Singapore Zoo in my JC years, I possess the skills that will prepare me for the challenges that I may face in animal-related jobs. Furthermore, I had collaborated with the education department of the Singapore Zoo as the Science Volunteer Corps director to hold a mini animal exhibition in campus to spread the awareness for animals.
I am passionate about the nature and wildlife and I would love to be able to work in a renowned wildlife institute in the world. The strengths that I possess, together with the passion that I share for the nature and wildlife will allow me to make a strong and immediate impact at Wildlife Reserves Singapore.
I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you to discuss my qualifications and the possibility of joining the wildlife team. Please find enclosed my resume for your review. I will follow up this letter with a phone call on Friday, 11th September to ensure that my resume has reached you and I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your time.
Yours sincerely,
Pow Audrey

ReplyDeleteAudrey, good effort made to highlight your love for animals, as well as your
ReplyDeleteskills and capabilities.
A few suggestions:
1) Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences --> concentration?
2) I tried searching the Singapore Zoo website, but the job adv is no
longer available. In the copy you'd submitted, one of the requirements
states 'min. two years experience'. Do you have sufficient experience for the position?
Do you foresee any problem(s) with regards to this?
3) Somehow, after reading, and re-reading para.2, I couldn't quite feel the passion you talked about in para. 3. Would you be able to include 'Voice', 'Individuality' and 'Relationship' aspects (as shared in my slides) into your letter?
Cheers,
Ms. Lim
Hi Audrey
ReplyDeleteYour extra-curricular involvements are indeed a good fit with the rather specialized field of research and conservation! However, the citing of ‘courses on academic writing and communication skills’ seems a bit incongruous against the impressive background of zoological experience in paragraph two; besides, effective communication skills seem to be a general requirement for all professions.
Perhaps you could substantiate your claim about being ‘passionate about the nature and wildlife’ by explaining how you had taken up the extra-curricular projects despite your busy schedule at school. This would serve the dual purpose of supporting your claim and highlighting your time management skills. (Ms Lim also pointed out the same problem for my application letter – looks like we’re in the same boat!)
Finally, just a technical note: it would be more appropriate to drop the article ‘the’ in all your references to nature.

Hi audrey,
ReplyDeleteYour work experience and course of study (life science concentration in biology i suppose =) ) complements very well with the job that you are applying. I felt that there are some areas that you need to elaborate more.
Perhaps you could relate how some of the research experiences that you have gone through during the course of study in life science can help you with the job requirements of being a research and conservation officer in the zoo.
You may also want to elaborate more on your strengths and qualities because i felt that this was vaguely touch in your cover letter.
look forward to reading your improved letter. nice work
